Weekly Update!

I enjoyed seeing you! We are working on applying our HABITS! We learned about SYNERGIZE last week!

We like to have fun learning!

The children enjoyed listening to their name origins. We played Jack Be Nimble to familiarize ourselves with one another's names.

Our friend is showing us what tool we need to have before we choose a book from one of our thematic book bins. We "mark our spot" after we choose a book, so we know where to return it.  

 This week we are learning our color words, working on retelling, and making connections through reading some of the PETE THE CAT books. Tomorrow the children will create a class big book about their shoes! 

In math this week we are continuing to learn how to match counters to a number and writing our numbers the school way. Ask your child to share the poems they have learned when writing their numbers at home. 

We are learning that no matter which way we place a group of dots it doesn't change how many we have.

On the first day of school we learned our penny poem. On the fifth day of school we learned the nickle poem, and on the tenth day of school we learned the dime poem.

We have finished assessing the children to learn about which letters and letter sounds they need to learn.  In Seesaw I sent to you what your child needs to be practicing. This is their first goal for the school year.  Please encourage at home practice.

Imagine Learning

Yesterday and today the children spent time on a wonderful new program called IMAGINE LEARNING!
This is a self- paced program that meets the children where they are in all components of language arts.
Reading, retelling, phonics, word study!

Assessments

This week we will be assessing our Rainbow Valley Friends on all of their sightwords.  We will be sending home enrichment work and reinforcement work for student who I feel need it.
You will also see this week a writing assessment come home. Please review your child's work with them.
Please provide reinforment at home by having your child write and apply writing strategies as often as possible.

WORD MASTERS

Congratulations to all of our kindergarten friends who have learned their first set of sightwords and have become word masters. If you don't know about Word Masters ask your child.


The children are enjoying posting their name on the Word Master Wall for all to see.


Please remember to have your child practice his or her sight words as often as possible. I will be assessing the second set of sight words after the holiday break.
 

Word Wall/Sight Word

What's A Word Wall? and Sight Words

A word wall is a systematically organized collection of words displayed in large letters on a wall or board in our classroom. It is a tool designed to promote group learning.  A word wall consists of words that children frequently see when reading and use when writing.  Each week words are added to help children appropriate spelling and sight word recognition skills.  Some words help children learn rhyming word families (at, hat, fat, cat, etc.), while others do not follow phonetic spelling patterns.The purpose is to help children learn to spell high frequency and vocabulary words as they begin to use the words in their daily writing. 
Please remember to review sight word flash cards with your child as often as possible.
You may want to play games with the sight words to make learning fun.
Hang the words on a wall and ask your child to say the Flashlight, flashlight poem (we practice this when working on our sight words) and shine a flashlight on the word.  Encourage your child to use the words in sentences.  (Verbally or if they are ready have them write their sentences.)
Your child can chat or sing their words.
Create a SIGHT WORD JAR.  Add sight words to the jar and have your child pick a word and chant it. 
Post the words in various rooms in your house and say, go to the _________room and tell me the word.  Or what was the word in the ___________?

We Love To Write!

I wanted to take the time to share with you more pictures of our students writing.  Today a student informed me that they were both an illustrator as well as an author!  Wow! 


Today we sent home your child's first set of  sight words with an envelope to keep them in.  Please cut these cards out and keep them in the envelope in a safe place.  Review these cards nightly with your child.  We also sent home the Reading Logs, try your best to read with child for at least twenty minutes every night.
