Report Cards and Roller Skating!

Today your child came home with their report card.
Please celebrate their hard work and discuss any areas of concern that may need some extra attention at home.
This grading period was filled with teaching and learning MANY new skills and strategies in all subject areas.  What is asked of the children to do from the first to the second grading period is significant.
As we move forward into the 3rd grading period please continue to encourage daily writing using high frequency words in an extended sentence.  
For example, Sara likes to ski down the large mountain. Sara also likes to drink delicious, hot chocolate.
Instead of Sara likes to ski.  I like hot chocolate.  Your child should be forming his/her letters the school way. I sent home the letters that they need to be practicing last week.

When reading your child should be sharing the 5Ws- WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, AND WHY.
 RazKids is great, but nothing beats a read aloud to Mom or Dad. :) Balance is the key. :)

Report Cards will be issued this week.  Please sign your child's envelope.  Keep the report card and return the envelope please.

RAZ-KIDS! I am really excited about this! I didn't think we could use this program this year. I was wrong. WE CAN! WE ARE! 

We are starting RAZ-KIDS an online reading program tomorrow November 4th). Your child's log in information will be sent home.  This program may be used at home and will be used frequently at school.  Please make sure your child is reading from RAZ-KIDS often.  

The program is temporary at this point.  It is paid for until February 2016.  At that time I am not sure what will happen. I decided we might as well use it while it is available to us!

Add Em UP!

The kids are having fun learning about adding. We are applying our writing and math skills each new day. After each lesson this week the children wrote about the strategy that they used to solve their equation.   We used a variety of manipulatives and setting mats to tell our joining match stories.  Today, we used dominoes for adding, and played an interactive game on the Promethean board.

The children have learned to use math talk.

 "Once upon a time I was in the store and I bought 3 pineapples..."

Math minds at work!

We are continuing our unit of study on the 3 Rs and our environment.  The children learned what conservation means.  They also learned that they are conservationist in training.

We read a wonderful story called Wump World.  Ask your child about this book, and ask them to share connections that they made.

 

 

Field Trip Reminders!!!

Your child needs:

backpack and folder (These will stay at school until we return.)

blue Kingston shirt or a blue shirt

a lunch and drink that is all disposable (It will be on a bus for a few hours)

rain coat and appropriate shoes (It may rain...:(

all chaperones must be to our classroom by 8:45am

 

 

News You Can Use!

Tomorrow is report card day. Many graded assignments will also be coming home and papers from the office.

Please help me in celebrating your child's endeavors. Find all of the wonderful parts of their hard work and let them brag!!! They've earned it!

Report Cards~

Today is a day to celebrate your child's continue successes in kindergarten.  Report Cards went home today in everyone's folder.  The growth that the children in Rainbow Valley has made is remarkable!
If your child needs support in an area such as writing make practicing writing part of your daily routine.   
Please KEEP the report card and SEND BACK that envelope by Thursday.

Today we started our new word study groups.  Some of the sorts may be those that you have seen before.  This means your child needed review on the features.  
The word study groups are fluid. If I see that your child is progressing and proficient in a particular feature I will adjust their word study group accordingly.

In math we continued to tally our data. Today, we learned that cheetahs are NOT the fastest animal on the Earth!  

During our small group time we worked on applying our reading strategies Get Your Mouth Ready, Look At The Picture, and Skip The Word and Keep Reading.
Please make applying these strategies part of your daily reading time. 

Report Cards

WOW! It's hard to believe that the first nine weeks are complete.  Your children have made remarkable progress.  They are reading, writing, problem solving, being proactive, setting goals, and reaching many goals.
Please help me in celebrating their continued growth. Each child in our room has worked hard. 
I am so proud to be their teacher!

During the second nine weeks we will continue to apply our reading strategies when reading, write daily, and practice our number skills.

Week Two!

Wow! It is hard to believe we have completed week two of the 2014-2015 school year. 
The children are adjusting well to routines.
The children are working each day on classroom expectations.
-staying on task to get our jobs done
-taking turns
-cleaning up in a timely manner
-showing our friends and teachers respect through listening and using kind words
- cleaning up in a timely manner
-self-regulating
-talk during talking times 
-work during work times 
I encourage socialization because it helps to create leaders. However, there is a time and place for it. This is an area we are all working on. 
The above are areas that our friend are developing each new day. I shared this information with you on the Thursday form. :)

At home you can practice these by giving two and three step instructions-have your child repeat back to you what you ask them to do.  If they complete the tasks without reminders offer praise. 

Work on one person speaks at a time.

If your child cleans up without reminders offer praise.

And above all, encourage trying your best.  In our classroom I will try and I can't yet are phrases we use. :)  
The class decided that one of our rules is Never Give Up!
They told me to write it in BIG letters!

Report Cards/100th Day/ Literacy Night

Report cards will be issued today! I am so proud of each and everyone of my kindergarten friends. Each one of them has improved. Way to go smart children!!!
The 100th Day of school will be Feb.13th. Please have your child bring in their 100 items.

Throughout the school year the guidance team and psychology team will offer informational sessions for interested parents.

“Parenting Children with ADHD or ODD” is a FREE seven week parent training class for parents of elementary aged children (ages 3 to 12) who have a diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) or who have significant difficulties with noncompliance.

The class is based on Russell Barkley’s “Defiant Children” program and focuses on improving the parent-child relationship and increasing positive behaviors as well as reducing noncompliance and negative behaviors.

The class will be taught by Dr. Suzy Farley, a Licensed Clinical and School Psychologist.

Both parents are encouraged to attend. Childcare will be provided free of charge but registration is required.

To register, please complete the registration form and fax it to 431-1770, attention Suzy Farley. You will receive a call or email to confirm your place in the class. Spaces are limited.
