Living Things

We started our unit on living and non-living things and changes over time a few weeks ago. You saw the children exploring and describing their findings in our class garden in Seesaw.
Today, we began our experiment on seed growth.
We started our lesson by reading a non-fiction book on plants and seeds. We discussed how seeds travel, grow, and how plans protect themselves.
We also reviewed what seeds need in order to grow.
From here we created a hypothesis for each of our seed cups.
One cup had no water, one no light, one we built buildings on top of, and one we gave space, water, air, light.
The children shared their predictions through creating a class journal. Here we will record our observations over the next few weeks.
The children are also growing their own bean seeds in a green house. They will record the growth, write descriptively, and use standard units or measurement to measure the plant growth. The children will see LIVE changes over time.
If anyone would like to donate 20 clear plastic drinking cups I would really appreciate it!  Just add a comment here if you are willing to help us or send me an E-mail. I need them in about 5 days.

Your child came home with name writing practice today.  Please use this as a guide when working with your child.

Today we read a story called I Love School.
Prior to reading we activated our schema. We asked ourselves-"What do I already know about school." We also discussed the characters, setting, author, and illustrator as we read.  We learned that setting change in stories.  When we remember a story and tell it in our own words we are retelling.  As you are reading with your child encourage activating schema, discuss the characters, setting, and events.  Ask- "does this remind you of something in your life?" When we make connections, we remember what we read.  Stay tuned for a video of our song!

Community Helpers

This is a great opportunity for your child to practice writing (with your help) and celebrate our bus drivers.

Children can honor unsung heroes and win laptop computer in annual “Driver of the Year” essay contest.
School bus drivers take seriously their charge to deliver their passengers to and from school safely and on time, but many of them literally go the extra mile. Thomas Built Buses asks: Do you know drivers who are making a difference?
Does your driver put in extra effort to make you feel secure on the bus? Or nurture a spirit of giving by helping organize food, toy and book drives? Does he/she know your name or start each day with a friendly greeting?Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are now invited to submit essays of at least 90 words to nominate their favorite school bus drivers. Through words and pictures, students can describe just what makes theirs school bus drivers so special. The child who nominates the grand prize winner will receive a laptop computer and $1,000 educational savings bond, and the nominated driver will receive a $1,000 Visa gift card.

To enter the contest, visit www. Thomasbus.com/contest for complete rules and an entry form. Entries must be postmarked by June 30, 2012.
