Supplies!
Good morning! I hope you are all enjoying your Friday snow day. I miss all of my Kindergarten Friends. I am here at school planning for the next few weeks! We have so much in store! Maps, Dr. Seuss, composing teen numbers, money, time, retelling using writing, and expository non-fiction writing! It is going to be busy, and fun!
I want to thank all of my friends who have been on RazKids and IXLMATH. I get reports sent to me on a weekly basis! WOW!!! You have been busy keeping your brains warm!
Parents,
If you can help, I need magazines for some assignments we are doing in the classroom. Family type magazines, where the children can cut out foods, cars, furniture, people. Please make sure they are family "kid" friendly.
I also need small, individual bags of colored Goldfish crackers. I need 30 bags for the first week of March. If you are willing to send these in can you please E-mail me? Thanks so much!
The children will be touching them. If you don't want your child to eat them please let me know.
Enjoy the weekend! I hope to see everyone on Monday!

Be, Be, My Valentine!
Today our room was filled with love and learning. We shared our Valentine's. We had a really cool lesson during our Gifted Resource time. The children were creating similes comparing a part of themselves to something in nature that is the same color.
Thank you Mrs. F. for sending in the super fun Valentine's Bingo Game!
Tomorrow, Saturday, I am placing the book order. If you didn't send yours in and you want to order go to the online site before tomorrow @ 3PM.
Thank you to all of our families who gave us gifts today. Mrs. Widman and I love everything!
Enjoy your 3 day weekend, may it be filled with lots of LOVE. :)

Shadows and The 100th Day Of School!
We did some shadow experimenting this week. The children made predictions, and tested different objects to see if they blocked light and created a shadow.

I just cant wrap my head around the fact that today was the 100th Day of School. It seems like just yesterday my new kindergarten friends walked into meet and greet. Wow! How they have grown!
Today, we sang songs about 100 in so many ways. We counted by 1s,5s,and 10s. Some of my friends counted by 2s. WOW! This was super cool!
We shared our 100 items, and the children shared how they counted them. Most of the kids learned that counting by 5s, 10s, and 20s was much faster then counting by 1s.
We created our 100 year old portraits which are displayed in our room. The children wrote by finishing this statement; When I am 100 years old I will....
These artifacts will be coming home in a week or so.
In small group, the children created 10 groups of 10 using dot painting and bingo stamping.
It was an exciting day.
Tomorrow is the one hundred first day of school! We will begin to count beyond 100!
Please continue to make counting on from various starting points and identifying numbers 0-100 (and beyond if your child is ready) as often as possible. :)

Composing Numbers 11-20
We are practicing composing numbers 11-20. The children have been using their tens frames and unifix cubes and are learning to build 10 and some more ones.
For example, 14 has one group of 10 and 4 more ones.
Here is a song we are listening and singing to in class.

Report Cards~
Today is a day to celebrate your child's continue successes in kindergarten. Report Cards went home today in everyone's folder. The growth that the children in Rainbow Valley has made is remarkable!
If your child needs support in an area such as writing make practicing writing part of your daily routine.
Please KEEP the report card and SEND BACK that envelope by Thursday.
Thank you!
Today we started our new word study groups. Some of the sorts may be those that you have seen before. This means your child needed review on the features.
The word study groups are fluid. If I see that your child is progressing and proficient in a particular feature I will adjust their word study group accordingly.
In math we continued to tally our data. Today, we learned that cheetahs are NOT the fastest animal on the Earth!
During our small group time we worked on applying our reading strategies Get Your Mouth Ready, Look At The Picture, and Skip The Word and Keep Reading.
Please make applying these strategies part of your daily reading time.

Non-fiction writing, collecting data, character day, and OUR CLASS WROTE THEIR VERY OWN BOOKS!
Where do I begin? This week, while a short one, was filled with learning!
The children learned about shadows and we discussed key vocabulary: shadow, light source, black, taller, shorter, above, next to
The children predicted what would happen during the shadow races before we went outside. They completed the experiment, and then they recorded their findings into a graph. The children wrote about their experiment and they needed to create a sentence that made sense, had an uppercase letter at the beginning, finger spacing, they had to sound out their words, and have punctuation at the end of their sentence. I am encouraging the children to go back and reread their words to make sure that their words make sense. We learned about Groundhog's Day. Then we made a prediction on whether or not he would see his shadow. They created a groundhog graph. We tallied how many thought he would see his shadow and how many children thought he would not see his shadow. Tomorrow, we will find out for sure! Please talk with your child about shadows and Groundhog's Day.
Can I just say that character day brought out our authors and illustrators? Every child in our class wrote a 3 page book about their Special Memory with minimal support. This has been an ongoing writing project. We are almost finished (illustrating takes time people)! The children were following multistep instructions, writing with pride, and reading their work to their peers while concentrating.
This will be their first graded assignment for writing for the third quarter. Wow! We are off to a great start!
