Our week ahead

The children are working daily on an All About Me chapter book. Each day we are working a new chapter.  The children are writing using neat handwriting complete sentences.  They are also illustrating their chapters using 3 star coloring! The writing homework that is being completed at home is awesome! Thank you for providing opportunities for your child to write neatly and creatively.

We will be using our new pictures that you sent in this for some extended writing lessons! I am super excited to get them started on these!

Last week we started our unit on fractions.  Today, your child came home with their faction book. Please have them read it to you. This can be recorded on their reading log!
We are working on halves and fourths however, many of our friends understand other fractional representations, so I am touching on them as well!
While eating and playing fractions can be discussed at home.  We have spent a few days on equal and unequal fractions. Ask your child to show you the difference.
Today we watched a BrainPopJr. on fractions! The kids enjoyed it and were able to apply their learning.

Reading, reading, reading....
At home your child should be reading daily.  I often ask the children, "Who do you read to at home?"  "What is your favorite book?"  It makes me feel so happy for them when they can answer these questions.  They feel proud to show off!
Every child in our class needs to practice Does It Look Right? Does It Sound Right? and Does It Make Sense? when they are reading. If they see an s at the beginning of the word said and say, "says."  That doesn't look right, sound right, or make sense. This is one example of what I see from many of our friends.
At this point during the year it is time for your child to be reading to you.
Retelling is BIG!  Really big.  Your child should be able to read a short book and retell the beginning, middle, and end. Check in as your are listening to them read and ask them to retell as they go along.

I will be sending home a parent survey.  Please fill it out and return it on or before May 20th. Your feedback matters to me. :)
