Fire Safety, Personal Narratives, Attributes, OH MY!

Your child will be coming home today with some helpful information from the VBFD. Yesterday we enjoyed learning about fire prevention, hurricane preparedness, dealing with bullies, and beach safety.

We also read a great book by Vera William called A CHAIR FOR MY MOTHER.  We learned how to add details to our writing so that our stories tell the 5 W's.  We also talked about how Ms. Williams focuses her writing and adds good details to make her writing interesting and fun to read.
The students used their personal photos to write their stories.

Sharing our first personal narratives.

Reviewing attributes

A great app to download for home use

Mrs. Law is helping us to review attributes
Your child should be able to sort objects by their attributes. Ask them to show you how.

Memories and Pictures

Today our memory pictures were due. Thank you to all of our friends who turned in their pictures today.  It was so nice to hear all about their memories.
We reviewed how important it is when explaining your pictures that you share the 5 W's- who, what, when, where, and why?
Tomorrow we will begin writing our memory stories.
PLEASE, be sure your child has their pictures.

Questioning and Calculators

Turn and talk and share with your partner a question you have.

Hey, that is the 10's place!

"I made a million!!!!"

Today the children practiced asking "thick" before, during, and after reading questions. As we read  Fly Away Home.
What a thick question? One that is meaningful and about the text. One that digs deep into the story.
We are practicing asking questions in both fiction and non-fiction text.  Please encourage your child to apply this strategy at home when they are reading.  You will quickly be able to see if they comprehend what is being read.
In math today we learned about the calculators functions.  This lesson quickly turned into a lesson about place value and we even got in some adding.
