Friday Learning!

We started off our day on IMAGINE LEARNING! This is a create program where the children work on reading skills.
Today I met with two more small groups to work with the children on creating their non-fiction books.
I am always so amazed at how many of my friends can follow multi-step instructions with ease.
Today we revisited another  non-fiction text feature,BOLD PRINT and we discussed how it helps readers to understand what is happening in the book.

The children are sharing bold words that they found!

We read a fabulous story today call Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge and discussed memories that we have and what it would be like if we couldn't remember special times in our lives.
A letter about our unit went home today.  Your child's item or picture of their item is due on the 20th.

In math we compared objects. We read ACTUAL SIZE by Steven Jenkins
Ask your child about this book,

Non-Fiction and Measurement

Today we talked about the non-fiction text feature- titles.
Why authors chose titles?
What are good titles?
Why titles make you want to read the book.

We read a non-fiction book called BARN OWLS.
In that book we saw a title, labels, bold print, and headings.
All very important elements to non-fiction.
It is important that our students are able to identify non-fiction text features consistently and independently.

Two of my four groups today began creating their non-fiction book on owls in a new program called WIXIE. It takes many steps to get into the program, but we did it! Tomorrow my other two groups will work in WIXIE as well.

In math today, we worked on NON-STANDARD measurement, and we reviewed telling time to the nearest hour.
We measured the children and met NON-STANDARD NOAH. If we don't have a ruler we can use another tool! All of our tools must be the same size and when we measure we LINE UP END TO END. Ask your child to show you.
We COMPARED (our new measurement word) if we were shorter (math word) or taller (math word) than our classmates using NON-STANDARD measurement.
