Money, Retelling, STEM Night

The children are learning to identify coins and their values.
We are working with money daily. Please review daily classwork that comes home in your child's folder. :)
Please continue to take out coins at home and ask your child to add up.
We always begin counting up using the coin that has the highest value.
For example, if we have a nickel and four pennies. We begin counting and saying, "Five cents, six cents, seven cents, etc...
When we have more than one cent we say cents.  Some of my friends are having difficultly counting from a dime to a penny. They like to say 10, 20.
I have introduced all of the coins to the children. We will focus on the dime and quarter this week.

They love these songs!

I hope that everyone liked the books I sent home last week. These are great tools to use for reading high frequency words in context, review short vowel words, digraphs, and blends that we have learned during word study. AND RETELLING!
Fluency is an area that we work on each day. We are learning to avoid ROBOT READING.

STEM NIGHT
TUESDAY, 6:30-7:30PM

Pictures will go home to each family on Monday. If you want to purchase them please do so in a timely manner. If you don't want them, send them back in a timely manner. Mrs. Urch's time is best spent working with the children, not dealing with picture collecting.  I appreciate your help with this.

AND THANK YOU FOR THE BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED CLASS DOOR! I LOVE IT!
I AM SO THANKFUL FOR EACH OF MY KIDS AND EACH OF MY PARENTS. YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME! MY DOOR WARMED MY HEART!

Dr. Seuss Fun

We read many Dr. Seuss books over the last two weeks.
One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish
Green Eggs and Ham
The Cat In The Hat
Wacky Wednesday
Great Day For Up
There's A Wocket In My Pocket
Fox In Socks
Please read Dr. Seuss books with your child at home.  While they may not be able to read every word, there are so many high frequency words in them that they can read and feel good about. The rhyme in these books is fantastic!  Rhyming is so important for early readers.  Thank you parents for sending in Goldfish and Green Eggs and Ham! They were a hit!

Friday!

They earned it! :)

Making Connections!

Text -> Self
I've felt sad before, just like Lilly in Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse.

We have spent several weeks on making Text To Self Connections. What does that mean?
When we make connections we are actually activating our schema.  We read a book and something in the book reminds us of something we have done before.  This is called a T-> S (Text to Self) Connection.  The students share aloud and sometimes write their connections.  Your child should be practicing making connections at home to help to improve their reading comprehension.   Please encourage making meaningful connections. They should explain how it is connected to the book.  For example, instead of just saying “I’ve eaten ice cream before,” a  better connection would be “I’ve eaten ice cream before, just like Harry did outside in Horrible Harry.”

Making meaningful connections allows a child to remember a story because it "connects" to them.

Your children are all reading!  :)  Please continue to encourage them to read to you as often as possible.  Remember that they do not need to be able to read every single word in a book. Rereading the same book over and over again is AWESOME! We always read our books more than once when we are using it for retelling.
If you need book ideas please let me know. :)

Games!

Here is a great site where you can download game boards to make and use to review sight words, numbers, and money! The best part is that they are all free!

Descriptive Writing

Today we took a journey to A Quiet Place. We read the story and painted a picture in our minds of our quiet place. We wrote... In my quiet place, I will see ____. I will hear_____.  While we sat outside in the sunshine and the breeze. It was magical!
The children's writing was awesome! Ask your child about their Quiet Place. :)

RAZKIDS and REMINDERS

Your child's reading level has been updated on RAZKIDS.
Please encourage RAZKIDS time at home.
Please be sure that your child isn't clicking on the levels that run across the top of the screen.
Your child should have all checks under their books. Once they have done that and I have assessed them at school, then I will move them if they are ready.
