Young, amazing authors!

Thank you to each of our families that came out tonight to support your authors and illustrators.
It warmed my heart to see the children beaming with pride as they shared their work.
Your children did this work on their own with very little guidance. We practiced a skill together and then they had to apply it in their writing independently and at times with peer support.
I wanted so much for this to be an authentic piece.
Your children took this task and ran with it.
"I wrote my first chapter book!"  I heard this from so many kids!
I was excited to hear the so many of my kindergarten friends are also writing books at home.
Again, thank you for encouraging your child's creativity. Thank you for celebrating their work!

GARDEN FRIENDS!

Please help to keep our garden growing this summer with your children.

Bookbags, folders, and summer reading!

Please make sure that your child has their bookbag and folder each day this week.

Virginia Beach Schools are partnering with the Virginia Beach Public Library on an exciting endeavor aimed to prevent Summer Slide, the reading regression that takes place when students take an extended break from reading. Students often require more than 9 weeks to recover the loss in reading ability due to inactivity.
To support this effort, Kingston students are encouraged to participate using one of the following options:
·         Read and log at least 5 books during summer break
·         Read and log at least 200 pages during summer break
·         Complete the Virginia Beach Public Library Summer Program
In September, bring the student reading log back to school during the first week of school. We will have a celebration of our students’ reading success with a SUMMER READING CELEBRATION, complete with ice cream for all participants.

Fudge Fractions! Heroes In History!

Being proactive, thinking like a mathematician.
Today the children were given a math Exemplar. Together they had to find a solution and explain their solution.

What is a hero?  Yesterday the children discussed this.  As you can imagine we had a wide array of answers.
Then, we began to learn about a famous person, Jackie Robinson.
The children made connections to the struggles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mr. Robinson right away! This was really cool to see. The children understood how it is important to be proactive and to think win, win even when it may be difficult.  "Even those guys did that!"
The children recalled facts about this famous man and made connections to goals that they have for themselves!
Ask your child to share what they remember about this famous American from the past.

Tuesday Learning Time!

REMINDER- AUTHOR"S NIGHT IS ON TUESDAY JUNE 16TH. COME ANYTIME BETWEEN 5:00-7:00 TO SEE YOUR CHILD'S WORK! YOUR CHILD CAN READ THEIR STORY TO YOU. SEE YOU IN THE CAFETERIA ON TUESDAY!

We are still in the groove for learning!
The kids enjoyed learning more about the past and the present today.
Our discussion was priceless!
"If I was a farmer in the past, I would have build some kind of heater to keep me warm on that tractor!"
"The kids had to go outside to the potty!" "Are you kidding me?"
The children completed a Venn diagram about the past and the present.
On the back of their diagram they shared during sharing circle a sentence about their new schema.

During small group with me the children continued or started their Sticker Stories.
We are taking stickers, creating a setting, and writing a fiction story.
I am looking for the children to be independently starting with uppercase, finger spacing, using vowels inside of their words, matching their words to their pictures, ending their sentence with a period.
Please ask your child to write at home as often as possible,

Today we had our visitor from Junior Achievement.
Your child came home with their "garden" of veggies.

Monday!

I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around that we have one more Monday together. :(
This has been such an exciting year. I am sad to see it come to an end.
Today, was an exciting Monday. While many of my friends came in tired they ended up walking out filled with energy.

Today we read a neat book called Mathterpieces.
The children used samples of famous art pieces and math various number combinations.
How many ways to make eight using Claude Monet's lilies.

Today we started our last unit un social studies on Now and Long Ago. A look at the past and the present. We read a non-fiction book and discussed the difference over time.
Ask your child what he or she learned.
