We are so thankful...

Parents,
Thank you for sharing your amazing children with me.  I can't believe we are already at the end of November.  I am so thankful for each of you.  You have welcomed me to Kingston, you support your children and their teachers, you give so much to support our classroom, and most importantly you are instilling a love of learning in each of your children.
Your children are also thankful for so many things.

In Our Community

We had another important visitor in our classroom this week. Mrs. Donnelly.  She shared with us all about her job as a pharmacist. She shared with us the tools that she uses during her day.  The children were thrilled to hear that she uses a ROBOT!
Mrs. D. shared with us that we should always be careful around medicines, and how some medicine may look like candy. It is so important never to eat anything without asking a parent.
She explained to our class that reading, math, and science help her to do her job each new day.
Thank you Mrs. Donnelly for helping us to make connections to our learning and our community.

Yesterday I introduced a math program that all families have access to at home.
IXL MATH
I encourage every one of my kindergarten friends to get on as often as possible.
Parents please monitor how your child is doing in each question set.  If your child is having difficultly with a set of questions perhaps we have not learned the skill.  I encourage them to be thinking independently.  There are 3 areas to work in pre-k, k, and first.  If they are zipping thorough all 300+ questions, then they can move to the 2nd grade section.

Writing, writing, and more writing.
We have been spending a great deal of time on writing.  The children have been taught what a sentences needs.
Here are the icons we are using while we are writing. I am encouraging my friends to sound out their words using beginning letter sounds.  My friends who are doing word sorts and ending sounds sort, I am looking for them to be applying that knowledge in their daily writing.  It is important that your child is given every opportunity to write at home.
Each week Mrs. Widman is working with small groups on handwriting.  If your child is writing at home please ask them to write the "school way."  Being neat and being able to reread what they have written is key!

Community Helpers Help Us!

Today we were very excited to have Mrs. Rogers share with us all about her job in public health.  She shared with us why it is important to get rest, eat healthy foods, exercise, brush our teeth, and stay clean.  If we do these things we stay healthy!
Thank you Mrs. Rogers!  You make learning fun!

Ordinal Numbers

In math we are talking about ordinal numbers.
Check out this site!
http://www.turtlediary.com/kindergarten-games/math-games/ordinal-numbers.html

We are also learning about more, fewer, and the same.
The children are learning to identify and describe a set of having more, fewer, or the same.
This is a skill that can be easily practiced at home.

Report Cards

WOW! It's hard to believe that the first nine weeks are complete.  Your children have made remarkable progress.  They are reading, writing, problem solving, being proactive, setting goals, and reaching many goals.
Please help me in celebrating their continued growth. Each child in our room has worked hard.
I am so proud to be their teacher!

During the second nine weeks we will continue to apply our reading strategies when reading, write daily, and practice our number skills.

Please sign and return your child's report card envelope.

Thanks so much!

Who is in our community?

Today we had the honor of having Mrs. Fritz share her career with our class.  She is a musician and teacher. She shared with us that she teaches children under the age of five, music.  She also shared the many tools that she uses to teach music.
Mrs. Fritz shared that without music our world would be boring.  The class agreed.  "Can you imagine the movie Frozen without music?"  The class agreed, it would be boring.
What does music teach us? Words, helps us to dance, helps with feelings, and we all agreed, music is fun!

If you are interested in coming in to share your career with the class, please E-mail me soon! I have two more slots.

News From Rainbow Valley!

Social Studies

During the last two weeks we have been learning about our American Symbols and Jobs within our community.
Today we had a speaker, Mr. Moore, a computer programmer.  He creates GAMES! Wow did this statement get the children's attention!
Each day we are learning about how jobs impact our community.  Outside of our room we have the children's writing displayed.  The children shared what their goals are- Habit Two- Begin with the End In Mind.
They shared what they want to be when they are a bit taller.
If you are interested in joining us to share your job with the class please E-mail me. I have a few spots open!

Fall Fun Day!

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers for helping to make learning fun!  The children had a blast!  The children created a scarecrow out of shapes, the measured and weighed various sizes of pumpkins.  The discussed how the pumpkin weighed more or less then they did.  They practiced reading measuring tapes and writing the number that they measured.  They did a sink and float station with fall fruits and veggies.  Did you know a pumpkin floats? Ask your child all about it. The children stuck their hands inside of a pumpkin (well some did!)  They used their five senses to describe the pumpkin.
