Reading, Retelling, Counting

Today we read AMAZING GRACE.

In class we continued to make text to self connections to the story and discussed how those connections help us to remember what we read.
Following the story and our discussions the children had to draw and label the characters and the settings of the story.

When you are reading with your child at night ask them to share their meaningful connections, the characters, and the setting.  This is a great way to check in on their reading comprehension skills.

During our math time we worked on counting by 5s using our SPLAT game! We use this for many of our math skills.   Please check out SPLAT if your child needs reinforcement at home.

100th Day Fun!

We had a blast celebrating the 100th day!
We counted in all different ways to make it to 100.
The kids discovered many faster ways then by 1s.
We enjoyed writing about what we would do with $100.00.
Did you know you could get 100 toys at the Dollar Store with $100.00?
This was BREAKING NEWS!!!! ;)

We took the number 100 and transformed it into something new...
To be continued... (more to come on that in the next few days)

The children loved sharing their 100 things! I was so excited to hear the many ways that they counted them at home.  It was precious to hear, "My parents made me count them by 1s and then by 10s." "My Mom made me count them by 2s and 5s."  WAY TO GO PARENTS!!!  Encouraging and extending thinking!
We are creating a class book that will display their work. Each child will be getting a copy in the next week or so.

Text To Self Connections and Counting On!

Today we read a beautiful story called Fireflies.
We worked on making Text To Self Connections as we read.
The children did an amazing job.  Many of them shared how they felt excited when they caught a firefly or a turtle before.
Some shared feeling of sadness just like the boy in the story when he had to set them free.
After reading and making connections whole group the children practiced making connections independently.
Each of them have a bag of Just Right Books that they chose based on their interests.
Using sticky notes the children read their books and made connections. WOW! They were amazing!  Ask your child what connections he or she made at school today.

Making Just Right book choices!

The children had more practice today with counting on from a given number.  It is important that your child can identify their numbers 0-100.

Math and Information

Today we focused on counting on.  We learned that counting on is a much faster way to count.  We give the students a number and ask them to "splat" the next three squares.
We will give the students a number and ask them to count on early next week.
I have shared this site with you before, please allow your child to visit and play.

Valentine's Day!

Parents: I am locked out of email. Apparently if you change your log in information from home it locks you out of everything! Boo! I have done much pencil paper planning. It's nice to go "old school" sometimes.;)
If you have been Emailing me, I am sorry.
I hope on Monday I can work this all out.
Looking ahead, please send in Valentines cards with your child. Your child may sign their name to them, bit not wrote their classmates' names. It's easier for them to pass out. We have 24 children. Again, they must write their name on them.  If your child is not participating please let me know.
We are working on figuring out which day will be the 100th day of school. Please begin working on having your child collect and count 100 things. They must fit into a bag no bigger than gallon size. Nothing sticky, wet, melts, sharp please. Again, date TBA.
